weasel shit coffee

Coffee is apparently "the second most traded physical commodity in the world" after petroleum. And Vietnam is the world's second largest exporter of coffee. There has to be a lot of money in that. Did you know that coffee 'beans' are actually the seeds of little fruits? Thank god for Wikipedia.

Anyway some animals eat the fruit of the coffee plant, including the Asian Palm Civet. A lot of people mistake this animal for a different mammal, the Weasel. Imaginative people in Asia discovered that a particularly delicious coffee can be brewed from the 'beans' harvested from this creature's excrement, giving rise to what the Vietnamese call Cà phê Chốn and many others call weasel shit coffee.

My search for this delicacy lead me to Cafe Mai, which i'd read is the place for cà phê chồn. It wasn't on the menu, but the waiter (who was a vacant-looking 13 year old boy with bleached hair) assured me with a point and a nod that the item "cà phê Mai" was in fact weasel shit. So i got a cup. It tasted like normal coffee.

The squirrel in the attached video lives outside another cafe near where i work. i don't know whether this animal also has the ability to defecate great coffee. Maybe.

Essence of civet is one of very few animal byproducts that are used in making perfume. It is found in Guerlain's Jicky, the first commercial perfume.

I was never a big coffee drinker, anyway - but on the subject of exotic foodstuffs, I seem to recall an article in the Reader's Digest many years ago, which described fish fingers as a great internationally traded commodity.

The article painted a picture of vast refrigerated mother-ships filled to the gunwales with tasty crumbed morsels of white fish being directed around the world in response to the shifting fortunes of mighty trading nations...

Do your bit for world trade in these troubled times. Have fish fingers for dinner. Are they available in Vietnam?

That video: The caged squirrel. See it trying to observe you from different points of view, trying to see you, smell you, touch you, even taste you. Poor little bastard.

It's a pity to see and difficult to understand why people tend to keep their lovely creatures on chain...
So typical to them ...and I have an explanation of it...anyway..

A squirrel visits my balcony almost..dunno exactly how often , but I see her at least twice a week..hehe... she is regular there....I leave there walnuts - she likes them a lot .
/hehe ...pistachios?...I eat them on my own/.
Oh , man ! you even can't imagine how clever she is !Once she didn't pick up the nut and it stayed there for days. When I tried to find out what was wrong with it I got - it was empty!
hehe..should it have been taken ?!
An empty nut!hehe...my clever one!

It's great - I can see her in just a half hand distance, I think I could catch her, but I never do it.
she is always busy ..and in a hurry ..hehe.. a pure joy

well, ..about the coffee ..
I'm not impressed by Vietnam's coffee.I've drunk it all these years long ...being under communist regime..So...I think , I had enough...It was the worst coffee I had ever had.
hehe... but ! may be that time this "High Tech'" hadn't been launched ...hehe not yet

There's an idea for a t shirt... a photo of this creature saying, "Eat my shit!" or rather "drink my shit".
Do they play scat music in the cafe? I've seen some pictures of people with faeces all over their face and bodies.. little did I realise that it was probably just an innocent shot of some people in a coffee shop.
I'm curious what type of visual signals this boy gave you for you to realise that it was in fact made from shit.
I'm with you, s.. I dig squirrels too

Just watched the clip... wow I've never seen a caged squrrel before. I've only seen them in the "wild".. you know, running free. I've seen all sorts of animals in captivity, though no squirrels, so it's very horrible to witness.
Free that squirrel, Rich.. Go back with a ski mask and wire cutters.
